Quote from: Cronus's basic overview
1. Read all the rules, comments, and requirements listed in the Event Post. You don't want to risk a DQ because you missed a rule.
2. Visit the markets along the race route to make your shopping list. You'll want to know where you are buying what. You need to get at least one of each item and none can be from the same island.
3. Get a ship to the starting island. If you have a renamed ship, that's better.
4. Chart a course. Make sure you are going to visit all the islands listed in the order they are listed.
5. Type /info to make sure you're leaving at the start of any minute.
6. Buy a bid ticket from the hold of your ship. Consult the list you made in step 1 so you know what to buy.
7. Set sail and puzzle like mad.
8. Port at each stop in order, and buy a bid ticket from the hold of your ship. Consult the list you made in step 1 so you know what to buy.
9. Port at the last island and buy another bid ticket.
10. Report your time to the wiki.

December Daily Doodles

A favorite every year!

Quote from: Apollo
When: December
What: a holiday-themed month of fun and frolics, a new contest every weekday for a month
Who for: everyone
Who by: Apollo and friends!

It's about to start again, and once more you've got a busy month ahead for you! Every weekday, a creative contest will be posted. Most of these contests will be forum-based and will require entries the same day. 24 hours after one contest opens, it will close and the next contest will be announced. There will be a variety of prizes during the month and they won't be pre-announced.

There will be multiple forum threads for this event. This thread will contain a running summary of events, winners and prizes. Each week of Doodles will then have its own entry thread.
There will also be weekend events, and those will be posted separately.
One weekday per week will be a tournament day. The top prize in each will be a colored familiar. The tournament day, type and time should be announced at the beginning of each week.

>--------------------<

The general rules for the forum contests are as follows.
-- Only one entry per player in each day's contest, but you may enter as many different contests as you wish during the month.
-- You must include your pirate name and ocean at the top of your entry post. Make sure you use the pirate and ocean for which you would want to receive a prize.
-- We will try to make the instructions clear for each contest. Unless we make a serious booch, we are not going to be answering questions during the day. Just read the instructions and have a go at following them.
-- The entry thread is going to be busy enough without chat. Keep the entry thread just for entries please!
-- The general rules on avoiding tasteless or offensive material apply at all times on this forum but I'm mentioning them again here just in case.
-- Judging will be completed as soon as possible after the contest has closed, and barring illness, certainly within a day of the contest closing. Winners and prizes will be posted in the second post of this thread once judging is complete, as well as a more detailed results post at the end of each Doodle in the entry thread. At any one time, therefore, there is likely to be one contest open for entries and one contest being judged.
-- We will be doing most of the judging, bringing in others as and when we need them. There will be lots of events, though, and we are not going to get into discussions on the judging on any individual event.
-- We will try to deliver prizes as they are announced.
-- Don't get hung up on the prizes. Lots of people participate, and only a few win prizes. Take part because it looks fun, it's an interesting challenge, and it's an opportunity to share your quick-fire skills with your fellow players, and maybe do something that you wouldn't normally do!

>--------------------<

Much of the above is based on last year's post, but you may have noticed the frequent use of first person plural. I mentioned previously that there would be some changes to the Doodles this year, and the main one (which breaks my heart!) is that my other responsibilities mean I can't commit to running the Daily Doodles myself. I have therefore recruited a crack team of Wonderful Oceanmasters to entrust the Doodles to this year. They are fabulous and shiny people, and they will take good care of you. Besides, it gives me a chance to enter some of the contests myself!
Week 1: Cronus the Pointy-Headed will provide an imaginative and fun start to this year's Doodles
Weekend 1: Cronus (one week just isn't enough, as I always knew)
Week 2: Galene will bring her own rose-colored sweetness to the second week.
Weekend 2: Hera, the oceans' favorite mom, will entertain you for a weekend.
Week 3: Gaea will bring all her planet-sized wit with her for the third week.
Weekend 3: Bia can always be relied upon to provide excellent December entertainment, and takes the third weekend.
Week 4: Hephaestus puts on his Santa hat for the fourth week.
Weekend 4: Glaucus has run some fantastic Doodles in the past, and I'm looking forward to this weekend!
Week 5: Apollo - well, I couldn't bear to give them all up!

December 31st - End of Doodles Party, probably 12noon game time. More details will be announced nearer the time.

The default time for contests to open and close remains midnight game time. However, the individual schedules and commitments of the other Oceanmasters means that the Daily Doodles in some weeks might open/close at a different time - the host for the week will inform you of this before the start of the week, and stick to the given time for the whole week (i.e. each contest will still be 24 hours long, even if it has to start a little later than midnight).

>--------------------<

That's it for now. Look for the first Doodle just after midnight PST on Monday 1st December.

>--------------------<

If you're interested in how the Doodles work, take a look at Last year's contest thread, the 2006 contest, or the inaugural 2005 edition.

Investigate finding the following:
-- a microphone
-- a digital camera or scanner
-- a link to Artpad (http://artpad.art.com/gallery/)
-- a link to Artrage or equivalent (especially free download version!)
-- a drawing / art / paint package that you're comfortable with

Illustrate the Cursed Isles

See link above for DAILY updates.

Quote from: Gaea
Recently, Headquarters commissioned Hephaestus to take a group of OMs to the Cursed Isles, in order to ensure that they were a safe place, and to seek out the strange and wonderful things which can be found there. He blackmailed a few of us assembled a team consisting of Galene, Cronus, and Gaea, and we set out. We managed to pack notepads and are detailing our adventures on the Puzzle Pirates Blog, but wouldn't you know it, my son managed to knock the portrait easel overboard. He takes after his father. As no mission report is complete without pictorial evidence, we are coming to you for help so that Artemis doesn't yell at us. We don't need it to be perfect, but we do need it to be speedy!

Your task is to pick a scene from the day's blog entries, and illustrate it. You will have 24 hours from the time the last entry of the day is posted (at which point we'll update this thread with links to all the entries from that day.) Beyond that, there are no rules. Cut things out of magazines to make a collage, assemble your friends to model for photographs with amusing props, use your leet photoshop skills, paint a sixty-foot-high mural on the side of a handy warehouse, draw stick figures in Paint - it's entirely up to you. Prizes will vary, and the winners will receive lovely eggy furniture. The entry thread is here.

Prizes: OM eggs and assorted other goodies

Lucky Dip 2008

Quote from: Apollo
Announcing the return of

The Oceanmaster Lucky Dip

Luckysun has put out the call to the other Lucky Dip Oceanmasters. There are sacks of gifts ready for YOU!

From the 1st December, they will be popping up occasionally on all production oceans, ready to fight you for gifts. These Lucky creatures will rummage in their sacks and choose a present to wager in a 1 v 1 challenge with you. If you win, you get the present. If you lose, you might just get a little something as a consolation prize, even if it's just a few PoE.

The Lucky Dip OMs will all have white names, and all have names start "Lucky---".

They could appear at any time in December, on any ocean, on any island. If you see them, go and see if you can get to fight them!

The Lucky Dip OceanMasters would like to remind you that the Lucky Dip has to be fitted in around other duties, and they acknowledge in advance that they won't be around as much as you'd like them to be. However, enjoy them if you catch them!

Notes:
1. Please do not burden the on-duty OMs asking (either in tells or petitions) about the Lucky OMs. On no account should you approach a blue-named on-duty OM and ask for a challenge.
2. Give others a chance. If you've already fought a challenge with a particular Lucky Dip OM (win or lose), please let someone else have a go after that. That includes logging in another alt to take part. ;)
3. Lucky Dip Oceanmasters could have different approaches to accepting challenges, from taking random challenges, or first-come-first-served, to having DND on and doing the challenging themselves. Whichever the approach, they will all try to be fair and equitable, so please don't grumble at them if you don't get a go!
4. Lucky Dip Oceanmasters are likely to move around, rather than staying in one place - don't be surprised if they disappear.
5. Some Lucky Dip Oceanmasters will be willing to fight challenges in any carousing puzzle, others may only do one or two - this is their choice.
6. This event will start at the beginning of December, and continue through to the end of December. There is no time schedule for the appearance of the Lucky Dip OMs.
7. It sounds obvious, but these are event characters only - they are not going to be accepting hearty requests, or joining your crew.
8. While we're there, we're being bombarded with challenges, trade requests, hearty requests, jobbing requests and tells. We're probably not able to follow the chat! Last year, there were people offended at not getting a response to chat or tells - we can only apologize in advance - it's simply not possible!
9. You may find Lucky Dip OceanMasters on Opal who don't speak German - be patient with them!
10. There is no #10 at the moment, but I reserve the right to add it, or indeed any other notes, as required.

Weekend Bake-Offs

Quote from: Apollo
I'm going to be running a series of old-style bake-offs for sailing, carpentry and bilging, one (or sometimes two) per weekend for the few months, until I've done each puzzle on each ocean. This is an exciting chance for those are you who excel at the duty puzzles to win real-life prizes!

The real-life prizes include a tote bag, a mousepad, and various mugs.

For those of you new to these, or those or you whose brains are too rum-addled to remember a few months back, here's how they will work.

  • The date and time for each bake-off will be pre-announced, posted in the specific ocean Events forum, and linked in the second post of this thread.
  • I will not broadcast the event, unless participation is much lower than expected.
  • At the time stated in the ocean Events forum thread, I will post a whisk on the noticeboard (Events tab of the noticeboard on any colonized island). This whisk will take you straight to a bake-off ship, without the need to be jobbed into the crew.
  • There may be two ships available - you may whisk to either.
  • Each ship will have plenty of stations for the competition puzzle. Find a station as quickly as possible so that you are not hunting for one when we start. There are stations all over the ship, including in the cabins.
  • Stay quiet and do not spam.
  • Once the jobbing time is over, or when the ships are full, (whichever is the earlier), I will start to give instructions for the bake-off. From this point, spamming or unnecessary chatter will cause you to be planked. Then the bake-off will begin.
  • In these bake-offs, the contest will consist of a single 30-minute puzzling session. We will set sail, engage with another ship, and stay in sea battle for 30 minutes. We will then disengage and return to port.
  • Competitors must be on station from the beginning of the puzzling period, and must stay on station throughout the contest, until we reach the island at the end. You may dismiss and re-take the station if you need to, but you may not stay off-station.
  • The duty report at the island (not the one at disengage) defines the winners.
  • For each bake-off, two real-life prizes will be available as options on the prize list, as will a colored familiar, rare furniture and trinkets. There will be 12 prizes offered on each ship.
  • In-game prizes will be distributed immediately after the bake-off. Winners who select real-life prizes will need to PM me after the event with a real name and mailing address for the item to be mailed to them.
